“What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet;” —William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
Poor Romeo and Juliet never had to worry about changing their names when getting married, but you might.
Probably not the single most common error, but definitely one that ends up getting some tax returns rejected, is when the name you list on your return doesn’t match the name on file with the Social Security Administration. If you get married, divorced, or change your name for another reason, you absolutely need to make sure that you update your paperwork with them ahead of tax season, or you’ll have to file under your unchanged name.
Just so you know, changing your name on your Social Security card has to be done in person at your local office, and they’ll need the correct documentation, including your marriage certificate.
