After watching Maria, Florence, Katrina and other major hurricanes on the news, you may be thinking of how to plan for disasters that could actually occur here in New Mexico. Primarily, the two most serious disasters that we face here are zombies and fires.
There are lots of guides that address the specifics of zombie outbreaks, including movies and video games. There are substantially fewer that address how to recover after a fire. Whether the disaster is unnatural (zombies) or natural (fire), you’ll need to make sure that your paperwork is in order to alleviate the worst of the financial difficulties.
Consider these simple steps:
- Look over your homeowner or rental insurance to see what kind of disaster coverage you have.
- Create an inventory of your stuff. An easy way to do so is to walk around your house while taking a video of your stuff, describing it and when you got it.
- You should also keep copies of your important documents, we recommend digitally so that they don’t take up much space, somewhere other than your house that you can get to them if something happens to your property.
When something serious happens, you want to make sure that you can clearly focus on keeping yourself and your family safe first, with as little worry about getting back on your feet later.
