Pets. They exist, and you may have one. And like many things that exist and that you may have, they may have effects on your taxes.
First, just a normal pet probably doesn’t have any impact on your tax return unless it eats it. Guard against that, and don’t leave dog food on your paperwork.
If your pet is actually a service pet, and you have certain paperwork, then it may actually be considered a medical expense, and you may be allowed to deduct its expenses as your medical expenses.
If your pet has a function to one of your businesses, say if it’s a junk-yard guard dog or a horse (or other hoofed beast) that pulls your sleigh (*cough*) then you may be able to deduct the cost of your pet on your tax return.
Finally, if your pet is a small business, say if it has a major acting role in a popular HBO show, then it’s almost definitely going to be considered a business expense. Talk directly to your pet’s agent and manager for more information.
