Congratulations on finding out that you’re expecting . . . an audit!
This is a joyful and overwhelming time for an expectant couple, but we do have some advice for you to smooth along the process as much as possible.
First, take a deep breath. It can be a little scary the first time, but we’re sure that you’ll do fine. By your next one, you’ll be a pro, right, and all of your friends will come to you for advice.
Second, make sure that you confirm! Respond to your IRS notice in a timely matter, so that you won’t have complications that would be addressed during regular check-ins.
Next, you should make sure that you have appropriate help! Aside from your normal doctor and gynecologist, you should get a specialist! A CPA, which is a special kind of “doctor” that specializes in these kinds of situations. It so happens that we have one of those on staff, so you could even come to us!
Then we need to know what we’re expecting. Instead of waiting to paint your walls pink or blue it’s usually better to find out in advance! That means asking to see what the auditor is asking for and what area of expertise the agent has. Is the auditor asking to see your 1099s or your charitable receipts? Perhaps receipts about a small business that could be a hobby?
Now we should start to prepare! That means gathering all of the paperwork that you have together to make sure that you have the things you need and the proof for your deductions! Doing this early means you have time to find the things that you may be missing.
Hopefully with these simple tips you’ll be in the best situation to welcome the presence of your new IRS auditor into your life!
Congratulations, and if you have any further questions we’re there to support you!
