There’s something called the Offset Program, which means that if you have certain kinds of debts, usually overdue income tax payments but also overdue child support or student loans, some or all of your income tax refund can be “redirected” to pay down your debt.
If that happens, you’ll get a notice from the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Fiscal Service will send you a notice that lists your original refund amount and the amount of debt that was “offset” as part of the program. That notice will also list the name and contact information of the agency that received the payment.
If you have some questions about this, we may be able to help you with answers. Feel free to use the contact form to get in touch with us.
