Name Matching between SSA and IRS

March 21, 2017

Did you change your name in 2016?  Did your dependent change their name in 2016? Whether it was for a marriage, a new super-spy job, adoption, or just witness protection, you need to contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) before you file your taxes.

If the name on the return does not match SSA records, the IRS is going to send you an error notice instead of your refund and that just means delays for you.

To notify the SSA of a name change, you need to file Form SS-5, it’s on their website.  Currently, this is a direct link: https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf
